This is the Cano Cristales River, which is located close to the town of La Macarena in Columbia, South America. The river, world famous because of its amazing display of color.

Caño Cristales has been called the “river of five colors”, “the river that ran away to paradise, as well as “the most beautiful river in the world. You can see that it is in fact a unique biological wonder. For the majority of the year, the Caño Cristales is indistinguishable from any other river, with a bed of rocks covered in dull green mosses and a cool dark blue current. However for a brief period every year the river blossoms into a rainbow of colors.

During Colombia’s wet season, the water flows fast and deep, obscuring the bottom of the river and denying the mosses and algae that live in the river the sun which they need. And throughout the dry season there is inadequate water to support the dazzling variety of life in the river. However during a brief span between the wet and dry seasons, when the water level is just right, the numerous varieties of algae and moss blossom into a dazzling display of colors. Blotches of amarillo, blue, green, black, and red–and a multitude of shades in between–coat the river.

Many of the more adventurous Colombian tourist agencies will fly travelers to the nearby town of La Macarena. The river, which is approximately 20 meters wide and runs for 100 kilometers, is rather remote. There are no roads leading to the river, therefore the Caño Cristales can only be accessed by horse.

There are almost two hundred countries in the world, and all of them have flags. Flags are important symbols of a country, because it gives meaning to a historical event that represents an important point in time for that country. For example, the US flag has 50 stars, symbolizing the 50 States they have. Although people of different nations don’t generally know the meanings behind all 200 flags, there are some that are more popular than others.

The ten countries listed below are the ten most popular flags in the world. More or less, we have seen and can easily recognize the flags of the countries in this list. If you don’t know any of these, it’s time to read through your geography or history books and look at the pictures.

1. Great Britain – If you are interested in world geography, I’m sure you’ve seen the flag of Great Britain. The cross with the X image is seen worldwide. The colors blue, red, and white are very noticeable and symbolic to the country.
2. United States – Who hasn’t heard of the flag of Uncle Sam? Unless you’re living on the far end of the world, you have likely seen the US flag. The one with the stars and stripes? That’s very much it.
3. Japan – All white with a red circle in the middle: this is the image of the Japanese flag. Although Japan is a small country, the Japanese are known worldwide for a number of reasons. Because of this, their flags are also recognized by foreigners in Europe and Americas alike.
4. Canada – The red maple leaf in the middle distinguishes the flag of Canada from the others. As the country’s national leaf, maple is a symbol of many good things. Maybe that’s why the Canadians chose this as the national flag.
5. China – The flag of China was chosen at the start of the Communist era. It is believed that the Chinese flag was chosen by ladies who later charmed their leader into making it the national flag. They were actually good, because up to now, the Chinese have no complaints about it. The whole world too, recognized it as the symbol of a great power soon to arise.
6. Saudi Arabia – As a foreigner to the Arabs, I don’t know what the words at the center of their flag means. But aside from the texts, we can notice a small sword drawn on every Saudi flag. It is the symbol of their never-ending fight with others for the benefit of the whole.
7. Israel – The star of David. This is what we will see in the Israeli flag. It is very symbolic of the faith they have, as well as their huge admiration for King David. Although it is just a simple flag compared to others, it is still very recognizable and loved by the people.
8. South Korea – At first look, the South Korean flag seems more complex. It’s not. The center circle is just a yin and yang image. In the corners, there are small patterned lines. For Koreans, this is really important because it distinguishes them from the Communist North.
9. Germany – The flag of Germany is always confused with other European flags. The reason is simple: the pattern which is black, red, and orange horizontal stripes. Like other flags, the German has horizontal stripes which make it difficult for people to memorize it.
10. France – Just like Germany, France’s flag is very confusing with others. This time, the flag is designed with blue, white, red vertical stripes.
